About Beat Tiles

Beat Tiles is a fast reflex game in the spirit of piano-tile rhythm taps. Four lanes of tiles scroll down the screen, and in each row exactly one tile is dark. Hit the dark one before its row slides off the bottom and the scroll carries on. Hit a light spot, or let a dark tile escape, and the run is over.

It suits anyone who wants a quick burst of focus, since a typical run lasts one to three minutes. The speed steadily increases, so the fun comes from settling into a rhythm and watching the background colour shift as your score grows. A good run is a long unbroken streak where your fingers stay calm even as the tiles speed up.

How to play Beat Tiles

  1. Tap a dark tile to get the board moving; nothing scrolls until you do.
  2. Always aim for the dark tile in the lowest row that has not been hit yet.
  3. Keep tapping one row after another without touching any light tile.
  4. Watch for the speed-up message every ten tiles, because the scroll gets quicker.
  5. Do not let a dark tile reach the bottom edge, or the run ends with a missed tile.

Controls

Keyboard and mouseClick a dark tile with the mouse, or use the keyboard: D, F, J and K hit the four lanes from left to right. A, S and L work for the first, second and last lanes, and the arrow keys also map to the lanes.
Phone and tabletTap the dark tile in each row with your finger. Tapping anywhere in a lane counts for that lane, and the very first tap starts the scrolling.

Scoring

You earn one point for each dark tile you hit, and your streak counter appears once you have chained five in a row. Every tenth point makes the board scroll faster, so late points are much harder than early ones. Because there is no time bonus, the only way to score well is to keep going without a single mistake.

Tips and strategy

  • Look one row ahead while you tap the current one. Your eyes should already be on the next dark tile as your finger lands on this one.
  • Use the keyboard if you have one. Resting four fingers on D, F, J and K is far faster than steering a mouse across the lanes.
  • With the keyboard, each key hits the lowest dark tile still waiting. If you skip a row by tapping higher up with the mouse, the lower tile will slip past and end your run.
  • Stay relaxed at each speed-up. The jump after ten tiles feels sudden, but the scroll eases up to the new pace over a moment.
  • Tap with a steady rhythm instead of bursts. Uneven timing makes it easy to hit the wrong lane when the tiles get quick.

Beat Tiles FAQ

▸Why did my run end when I tapped a dark tile?

You probably hit the wrong lane. A tap or key press is judged against the row you touched (or the lowest unhit row for keys), and if that row's dark tile sits in another lane, the run ends at once.

▸Can I play it with the keyboard only?

Yes. Use D, F, J and K for the four lanes. The arrow keys also work, and each press hits the lowest unhit row in the matching lane.

▸Does my score count toward any ranking?

Your final score is submitted when the run ends, so it can count toward the weekly leaderboard and earn XP. Your personal best is also shown at the top of the screen.
