About Daily Word
Daily Word is a five-letter guessing puzzle. A secret word is chosen for the day, and you get six tries to find it. After each guess every tile turns a colour: green means the right letter in the right spot, amber means the letter is in the word elsewhere, and dark grey means it does not appear. Your on-screen keyboard keeps track of everything you have learnt.
A game takes about two minutes, which makes it a neat daily habit. It suits anyone who likes word puzzles, from casual players to people who like to plan an opening guess. A good result is solving it in three or four tries, while a perfect day means narrowing the field with a smart first word.
How to play Daily Word
- Type any five-letter word and press Enter to guess.
- Read the colours: green is correct, amber is in the word but misplaced, grey is absent.
- Use the coloured keys at the bottom to avoid repeating letters you have ruled out.
- Build each new guess to fit every clue so far.
- Find the word within six rows, or the answer is revealed when you run out.
Controls
| Keyboard and mouse | Type letters on your keyboard, press Backspace to delete and Enter to submit the row. You can also click the letters on the on-screen keyboard. |
|---|---|
| Phone and tablet | Tap the letters on the on-screen keyboard, use Del to remove one and Enter to submit your five-letter guess. |
Scoring
A solved puzzle earns 100 points for each unused row, so solving on try one gives 600, try two gives 500 and so on down to 100 for a last-row solve. Solving in one or two tries adds a 50 point bonus. Running out of tries scores zero, so every row you save counts.
Tips and strategy
- Start with a word that mixes common letters such as vowels plus R, S, T or N. Your first row should teach you as much as possible rather than try to win.
- Use amber letters in a new position on the next guess. Reusing them in the same spot wastes a row, because the game already told you that spot is wrong.
- Keep an eye on repeated letters. If a letter shows green once and grey elsewhere in the same row, the word contains it only once.
- On guess four or five, narrow it down by picking a word that tests several unknown letters at once, rather than guessing only one likely answer.
- Press Enter only when you have five letters. A shorter row shakes and is not counted as a try, so you lose nothing by correcting yourself.
Daily Word FAQ
▸Is the word the same all day?
Yes. The answer is picked from the current day number, so everyone who plays on the same day gets the same word, and it changes when the next day begins.
▸Does the game check that my guess is a real word?
No. It only checks that you entered five letters, so any five-letter combination can be submitted. It still uses up a row, so real words are the smarter choice.
▸What does amber mean?
The letter is in the secret word but is in a different position. If it appears twice in your guess and only once in the answer, only one tile gets the colour.
▸Does my score count toward the weekly leaderboard?
Yes. A finished game submits its score, and faster solves give a higher number and more XP.
