About Mahjong Tiles

Mahjong Tiles is a solitaire matching puzzle played on a stack of tiles built in several layers. Each tile carries a coloured shape and a number, and your goal is to remove them all by clicking matching pairs. A tile can only be picked if nothing sits on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is open.

It is a calm game for people who enjoy scanning a board and planning ahead. A full board takes about five to fifteen minutes. The tiles are arranged so the layout can always be cleared, which means a stuck position comes from picking the wrong pairs, not bad luck. A good run is a clean board cleared quickly, with shuffles left over.

How to play Mahjong Tiles

  1. Find tiles that are free: nothing lies on top, and the left or right edge is uncovered.
  2. Tap one free tile to lift it, then tap another free tile that is identical in shape, colour and number.
  3. Matching pairs vanish together and open up the tiles beneath and beside them.
  4. If you tap a free tile that does not match, the selection simply moves to the new tile.
  5. Keep clearing pairs until the board is empty, or until no moves remain and no shuffles are left.

Controls

Keyboard and mouseClick a free tile to select it, then click a second tile with the same shape, colour and number to remove both. Use the Hint button for a suggested pair and the Shuffle button to rearrange what is left.
Phone and tabletTap one free tile, then tap its twin to clear the pair. Tap the Hint or Shuffle buttons below the board when you need help.

Scoring

Each pair is worth 20 points, with an extra 5 for every pair in a quick chain, where each match lands within four seconds of the last. Using a hint costs 10 points. Clearing the entire board adds a bonus of up to 800 points that shrinks by 2 for every second you take, plus 100 for each unused shuffle.

Tips and strategy

  • Look at the tiles on the upper layers first. Removing the top of a stack is what frees the most pieces underneath, so it should come before side tiles.
  • Pay attention to both the number and the shape colour. Two tiles can look alike but differ in a number, and a failed match just wastes a moment.
  • When several identical tiles are free, think about which pair opens the most new tiles instead of grabbing the nearest one.
  • Keep your shuffles for the late game. The game will reshuffle by itself if there are no moves left, but that uses one of your two shuffles.
  • Chain matches within four seconds to earn the combo bonus, but do not rush so much that you clear a pair that was blocking a better one.

Mahjong Tiles FAQ

▸What makes a tile free?

It needs to have no tile resting on top of it, and at least one side, left or right, must be open. A tile with neighbours on both sides is locked until one of them is removed.

▸Can the board get stuck?

It can. If no free pair is left, the game reshuffles the remaining tiles for you, using one of your two shuffles. When you have none left, the round ends as stuck.

▸Are these real mahjong tiles?

They follow the same matching idea, but the faces are simple coloured shapes with numbers one to nine rather than traditional symbols, which makes them easy to read.
