About Word Guess

Word Guess is a letter-by-letter guessing game in the hangman tradition. A row of blank tiles stands for a hidden word, and you pick letters from a keyboard to fill it in. Right letters appear in every spot where they belong. Wrong letters cost one of your six lives and add a part to the stick figure hanging from the gallows.

It suits word-puzzle fans of all ages and takes two to five minutes. You play through a chain of words rather than one, and the words get longer as you progress. A good run solves many words, keeps lives in reserve, and uses vowels and common consonants to narrow things down quickly.

How to play Word Guess

  1. Count the tiles to see how long the hidden word is.
  2. Guess a letter. If it is in the word, it fills every matching tile.
  3. If it is not, you lose a life and the figure gains a limb.
  4. Solve the word by revealing every tile before your six lives run out.
  5. After each solved word, a new and usually longer one appears with your lives refilled.

Controls

Keyboard and mousePress the letter keys on your keyboard to guess, or click the letters on the on-screen keyboard. A Hint button below the keyboard reveals a letter.
Phone and tabletTap the letters on the on-screen keyboard. Used letters turn green if they were right or fade if they were wrong.

Scoring

A solved word is worth 100 points, plus 20 for each life you had left, plus 10 for every letter in the word. Longer words and cleaner solves therefore score more. The run ends when you lose all six lives on one word.

Tips and strategy

  • Start with common letters like E, A, R, S or T. Short words in the early levels often hide a vowel in the middle.
  • Every word starts as simple three-letter words, then moves to five, then seven and finally nine or more letters. Adjust your approach as the length grows.
  • Use the Hint button sparingly. It reveals the first missing letter but costs a life, and it is unavailable when you are down to your last life.
  • Lives refill on every new word, so it is fine to take a risk on a tough word, as long as you do not drop to zero.
  • Long words usually contain several vowels. Once you find one or two, think of common endings such as ING, ED or ION to guess faster.

Word Guess FAQ

▸Do my lives carry over between words?

No. Each new word starts with a fresh set of six lives, although only the lives left at the end of a word add to its score.

▸Does the Hint button cost anything?

Yes. It takes one life and reveals the first letter that is still hidden. You need at least two lives to use it.

▸Will I see the same word twice?

Not within one run. Words you have already solved are removed from the pool while you keep playing.
