About Neon Commando

Neon Commando is a side-on shooter set on a small arena of glowing platforms under a pink moon. Enemies pour in from both edges of the screen in numbered waves, and you have a blaster, a jump and five hit points. You need to move, aim by facing and keep firing, because standing still lets enemies pile up on you.

Sessions run three to ten minutes. It suits players who like quick arcade action with a steadily rising challenge. A strong run clears many waves, takes down the tougher brutes that show up every third wave, and keeps hit points topped up by surviving odd-numbered waves.

How to play Neon Commando

  1. Face an incoming enemy by running toward it, then fire. Your shots travel straight in the direction you face.
  2. Jump onto the three raised platforms to reach flying drones and to escape ground enemies.
  3. Shoot grunts, drones, gunners and brutes before they touch you. Gunners also fire back at you, so keep moving.
  4. Check your five pink health blocks. Each hit costs one and gives you a short period of invincibility.
  5. Clear every enemy to finish a wave and start the next one with a larger group.

Controls

Keyboard and mouseMove with the arrow keys or A and D, jump with Up or W, and fire with Space, X, J or Enter. Holding the fire key keeps shooting automatically, so you can focus on moving.
Phone and tabletUse the on-screen buttons under the game: left and right arrows to run, JUMP to leap and the red FIRE button to shoot. Hold FIRE to keep shooting.

Scoring

Each kill is worth points by type: 10 for a grunt, 15 for a drone, 30 for a gunner and 100 for a brute. Every new wave also adds a bonus of 50 times the previous wave number. The run ends when all five health blocks are gone, and your final score is the total at that moment.

Tips and strategy

  • Drones fly in at head height, so jump while you fire. Standing on a platform often puts you level with them and makes aiming easier.
  • Gunners stop at range and shoot slowly aimed shots. Close the distance fast or jump over the shots, rather than staying in their line of fire.
  • Brutes take many hits and grow tougher each wave. Keep backing away while shooting, since they walk slowly, and avoid being pinned in a corner.
  • After a hit you flash and cannot be hurt for a moment. Use that window to escape, not to charge back into a crowd.
  • Odd-numbered waves after the first restore one health block if you are below full, so surviving to those waves is worth the effort.

Neon Commando FAQ

▸Does my gun aim up or down?

No. Shots go left or right depending on the direction you are facing. To hit flying drones, you line yourself up with them by jumping or moving to a platform.

▸Do I get health back?

Yes. When an odd-numbered wave after the first starts, you regain one health block if you have fewer than five. Otherwise there are no pickups.

▸Can I hurt enemies by running into them?

No. Touching an enemy damages you. The only exception is a drone, which is destroyed if it crashes into you, but you still lose a health block.

▸What counts as the end of a run?

The run ends when your health reaches zero. The result screen shows your score along with the wave you reached and the number of kills.
